The Kanlaon Volcano eruption on December 9, 2024, has left Negros Island on high alert. Following the explosive event, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) placed Kanlaon under Alert Level 3, signaling “magmatic unrest” and the potential for further eruptions.

The initial eruption in December forced the evacuation of thousands from Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. Residents were advised to remain vigilant as Phivolcs warned of potential hazards such as sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ash fall, rockfalls, lahars during heavy rains, and pyroclastic flows.

As of this writing, a 4-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater remains in place to protect nearby communities from hazards. Also, to minimize risks, flying aircraft near Kanlaon is prohibited, and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert and follow evacuation orders if issued.

Eruption and Ongoing Activity

Since the December eruption, Kanlaon has continued to show signs of activity. Phivolcs reported multiple ash emissions, with plumes reaching heights of 200 to 850 meters above the crater. The ash drifted west and southwest, affecting areas downwind of the volcano.

On January 25, 2025, three significant ash emissions were recorded:

  • 7:20 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. – Ash plume reached up to 850 meters.
  • 8:05 a.m. to 8:14 a.m. – Moderate ash emission observed.
  • 10:48 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. – Further ash plume activity noted.

The day before, Phivolcs monitored additional emissions, including a plume that rose 200 meters and a substantial sulfur dioxide release of 3,028 tons.

Kanlaon’s History of Activity

Kanlaon, a stratovolcano standing 2,435 meters tall, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. It has erupted multiple times in recent decades, including in 2016 and 2015. These eruptions typically involve sudden steam-driven explosions, often without prior warning. They’re often characterized by phreatic bursts, ash emissions, and significant gas release.

Safety Measures and Preparedness

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano closely, with Phivolcs providing regular updates through advisories and social media. The public is urged to stay informed and heed local government orders to ensure safety.

As the Kanlaon Volcano remains active, residents and visitors in surrounding areas are advised to take necessary precautions. Stay updated with official announcements and avoid restricted zones to minimize risks.

For real-time updates on the Kanlaon Volcano eruption, follow Phivolcs and local authorities.
