A recent survey reveals that a significant majority of Filipinos regard the University of the Philippines (UP) as the best PH university. The OCTA Research survey, conducted from November 10 to 16, 2024, revealed that 71% of 1,200 adult respondents selected UP as the country’s top university. De La Salle University (DLSU) and Ateneo de Manila University followed, with 15% and 14%, respectively.
UP was the top choice across various groups—regardless of age, gender, or education level. However, in the Negros Island Region, DLSU edged out UP with 45% against UP’s 37%. The survey has a ±3% margin of error.
UP’s Long History of Excellence
The University of the Philippines, established in 1908, has been a symbol of quality education in the country. It was created to train the next generation of Filipino leaders and professionals in fields like science, law, medicine, and the arts. Over the years, it has built a reputation as a premier academic institution that values public service and innovation.
UP is known for producing some of the brightest minds in the country. From government officials to scientists, many of its alumni are now leaders in their fields. Its unique programs and active role in research make it a standout institution.
Strong Showing in Global Rankings
UP also made waves internationally. In the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, UP climbed to 336th, up from 404th the year before. Ateneo and DLSU also improved their positions. Ateneo now ranks 516th, and DLSU moved into the 641-650 bracket.
The QS rankings evaluate universities using factors such as academic reputation, graduate outcomes, and research contributions. UP’s improvement in these rankings reflects its strong academic programs and consistent efforts to excel.
A Leader in Public Service and Research
One of UP’s defining characteristics is its commitment to public service. The university doesn’t just focus on academics—it also emphasizes its responsibility to contribute to nation-building. Many of its research projects aim to solve issues like poverty, public health, and climate change. This makes UP more than just a center for learning; it’s an institution actively working for progress.
UP’s research output also addresses global challenges. The university collaborates with international institutions to create solutions that benefit not only the Philippines but the broader world. Its strong focus on innovation and collaboration allows it to remain relevant in an ever-changing academic landscape.
A Source of Pride for Filipinos
The survey results reinforce how deeply Filipinos value education and institutions like UP. Its reputation as the best PH university is not just about rankings—it’s about the role it plays in shaping society. For many families, having a child study at UP is a source of pride and proof of hard work paying off.
UP’s legacy extends far beyond its campuses. It’s a symbol of hope, a reminder of what education can achieve, and a pillar of Filipino identity. As the university continues to thrive, it will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
