Tropical Storm Enteng (international name: Yagi) struck Luzon, Philippines’ main island, on Monday, after skirting the Bicol region southeast of Manila the night before. More heavy rain is expected, which the state weather service warns could lead to further flooding and landslides.
As a precaution, schools and government offices in the capital were closed for the day, ferry services in some areas were suspended, and 29 domestic flights were cancelled due to the severe weather. Several local government units (LGUs) have also opted to cancel classes on Tuesday, September 3
Eleven people were killed by floods and landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Enteng
Three people, including a pregnant woman, lost their lives in a landslide on Monday in Antipolo, near rain-drenched Manila, according to city information officer Relly Bonifacio, as reported by AFP.
Bonifacio also stated that the bodies of four other individuals, who drowned, were found on Monday in three separate locations within the hilly community after creeks overflowed overnight.
The Bicol city of Naga was also hard-hit, with a man electrocuted as floodwaters rose and a baby girl drowning, rescuers said.
“The floods were above head height in some areas,” Joshua Tuazon of the city’s public safety office told AFP, adding that hundreds of residents had been rescued.
More than 300 people were in evacuation camps on Monday, as local officials reported that floodwaters in the city of 210,000 were receding slowly.
Two landslides claimed two lives and damaged five houses in Cebu, a central city, on Sunday, according to the local disaster office there.
The storm also unleashed powerful currents and large waves in Manila Bay on Monday, causing chaos as a barge and an oil tanker were hurled onto the seawall, and another barge drifted off course, the coast guard reported.
Additionally, a tugboat and a small passenger ship collided while anchored, leading to a fire on the passenger vessel, according to the coast guard’s statement.
All 18 crew members on the passenger ship were later rescued, and a coast guard vessel arrived to extinguish the fire.
