The Philippines, long recognized as one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations, has been identified as the ninth most earthquake-threatened country globally. Recent research from the UK revealed that in 2023 alone, the Philippines experienced a staggering 581 earthquakes, underscoring its vulnerability to seismic events.
Situated within the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire,’ a region known for high seismic activity, the Philippines faces an estimated 100 to 150 earthquakes annually, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The study, conducted by Utility Bidder, a UK-based business energy consultancy company, highlighted the Philippines’ susceptibility to earthquakes, ranking it among the top earthquake-prone countries. Among the notable seismic activities was a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Hinatuan in Surigao Del Sur on December 2, resulting in over 6,500 aftershocks and three deaths.
Indonesia led the list with 1,941 earthquakes in the same period, showcasing the seismic challenges faced by countries in the region. The study emphasized that earthquakes exceeding a magnitude of seven are considered major earthquakes, causing severe damage primarily at the epicenter.
Additionally, the research shed light on the escalating financial toll of disasters globally. In 2022, the total cost of natural disasters reached a staggering £178 billion, indicating a significant increase compared to previous years. This upward trend underscores the importance of proactive disaster management strategies and sustainable practices.
Utility Bidder urged businesses to adopt a proactive approach to energy consumption, emphasizing the need to compare energy suppliers for efficient energy supply and cost-effective solutions. The study highlighted the critical role of early warning systems, earthquake-resistant infrastructure, and investments in climate and environmental protection to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
Despite these challenges, the Philippines continues to demonstrate resilience in the face of disasters, with ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and response measures.
