Amid rising tensions, Japan, the United States, and the Philippines have taken steps to strengthen their South China Sea Maritime Alliance. Their first maritime dialogue, held in Tokyo on Dec. 10, showcased their united stance against unilateral actions in the contested waters and their commitment to upholding regional stability and international law.
Japan, U.S., and Philippines Hold Maritime Dialogue
Officials from the three nations convened in Tokyo to enhance their collaboration in the maritime domain. Key attendees included Ryo Nakamura from Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Mira Rapp-Hooper of the U.S. National Security Council, and Teresa Lazaro from the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs.
During the dialogue, the three countries reaffirmed their opposition to actions that seek to alter the status quo in the South China Sea. They emphasized the importance of peaceful dispute resolution and pledged to bolster their South China Sea Maritime Alliance through increased cooperation. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for next year in the Philippines.
U.S. Deploys A-10 Warthogs to Support South China Sea Maritime Alliance
Reinforcing the partnership, the U.S. Air Force deployed A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, or Warthogs, to the Philippines for joint exercises with the Philippine Air Force. The aircraft arrived at Clark Air Base on Dec. 6 and will remain until Dec. 15.
These exercises, part of the U.S. Dynamic Force Employment strategy, aim to enhance interoperability and defense readiness between the two nations. This deployment underscores the operational strength of the Maritime Alliance and its role in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Scarborough Shoal Incident Escalates Tensions
Earlier this month, tensions flared when Chinese coastguard vessels fired a water cannon and collided with a Philippine fisheries bureau boat near Scarborough Shoal. Philippine officials also reported dangerous maneuvers by Chinese navy ships.
Despite these provocations, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ruled out deploying warships to avoid escalation. Instead, the Philippines lodged a diplomatic protest against China’s expansive territorial claims, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful resolution. These events further highlight the importance of a robust alliance in addressing regional security challenges.
