Filipino Human Trafficking Victims Return Home Safely from Laos

A group of Filipino workers, who were victims of human trafficking, has safely returned to the Philippines from Laos. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed that on Sunday, August 25, 2024, nine Filipino survivors arrived at NAIA Terminal 3 in Pasay. They returned on an AirAsia flight, marking the beginning of their journey toward justice and recovery. These workers are part of a larger group of 73 Filipinos who were rescued from human traffickers operating in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Bokeo Province, Laos. Initially, these workers were promised jobs as customer service representatives in Thailand. Instead, they were forced to work as scammers in illegal operations.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac promised that the government would fully support these survivors as they navigate the legal process and begin rebuilding their lives. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) played a key role in leading the rescue, in collaboration with other government agencies. These survivors will receive a wide range of support, including financial aid, counseling, and legal assistance. Agencies such as the DMW, Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA), and others within the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) are working together to provide this essential help.

The rescue of these Filipino human trafficking victims from Laos is a significant example of the government’s dedication to protecting its citizens abroad. These victims had been deceived by false promises of jobs in Thailand, only to find themselves trapped in illegal activities. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of government bodies, they are now safe and on their way to rebuilding their lives. The DMW and other partner agencies remain committed to assisting these survivors through every step of their recovery.

The ongoing fight against human trafficking remains a top priority for the government, especially in safeguarding Filipino workers abroad. The DMW continues to ensure that survivors receive the necessary help and support as they move forward on their path to justice.
