MANILA ᅳ A 29-year-old Chinese man, identified as Chen Xiao Bang, was arrested in Barangay La Paz, Makati City by operatives of the Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) Fugitive Search Unit. Chen is wanted by Chinese authorities for economic crimes and has been on the BI’s wanted list.
BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco stated that Chen was ordered deported and blacklisted last year for being an undesirable alien. “Members of the arresting team were armed with a deportation warrant which I signed pursuant to a summary deportation order issued against him by the board of commissioners,” Tansingco said.
Chen will be deported to China as soon as the required clearances for his deportation are secured. He is currently detained in the BI detention center at Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City while awaiting his flight.
BI-FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy mentioned that Chen was issued an arrest warrant by the Pudong branch of the public security bureau in Shanghai, China, for his involvement in a fraudulent investment scam. He is accused of defrauding Chinese investors of more than 3 million Chinese Yuan (over US$412,000) since 2018.
“His passport has been revoked by the Chinese government, making him an undocumented alien who is subject to immediate deportation,” Sy said.
Chen arrived in the Philippines in 2019 and has not left the country since. His arrest highlights the ongoing cooperation between Philippine and Chinese authorities in apprehending fugitives wanted for serious crimes.
