Chavit Singson Steps Back From Senate Run

Singson

Former Ilocos Sur Governor and Narvacan Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson steps back from the 2025 Senate race, citing health reasons after recovering from a serious illness.

At 83 years old, Singson made the announcement during a heartfelt speech streamed live on his social media accounts. He emphasized that prioritizing his health is necessary to continue helping the public in other ways.

“Health comes first so I can keep helping and bringing joy to all of you,” Singson told his supporters in Filipino. “After careful thought, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy for the Senate.”

Health Challenges Lead to Decision

Singson recently battled pneumonia, which left him hospitalized. Though he has recovered, doctors advised him to take an extended rest. Campaigning for the Senate, he explained, would be too demanding given his age and recent health issues.

“Running a campaign isn’t easy, and being a senator is no small job, especially if you take the work seriously,” Singson shared. “I don’t want to push myself too hard and risk my health.”

He admitted that he left the hospital earlier than recommended, even though his doctors urged him to stay longer for full recovery. This health scare reminded him of the importance of slowing down and focusing on his well-being.

A Life of Public Service

Singson’s decades-long career in public service has made him a household name in Philippine politics.

As governor of Ilocos Sur, he spearheaded numerous development projects that improved the lives of his constituents. His work as Narvacan mayor further demonstrated his dedication to local governance.

Despite stepping away from the Senate race, Singson assured his supporters that he remains committed to serving the Filipino people in other capacities. “I need to get stronger first so I can better serve and help everyone,” he explained.

He also expressed gratitude to those who supported his campaign plans. “To everyone who gave their time, energy, and support, I sincerely apologize. Thank you for your trust and understanding,” he added.

Initial Senate Plans

Before his withdrawal, Singson had been vocal about his intention to run for the Senate. In October 2024, he announced his candidacy and outlined his platform, which focused on improving the country’s transportation system.

Singson advocated for the modernization and digitalization of public transport, citing his previous efforts in the sector during the Duterte administration. “Even before I decided to run for senator, I was already helping the transport sector,” he said during his announcement.

He also expressed interest in leading initiatives to address long-standing transportation issues, highlighting his readiness to take on leadership roles in the Senate.

Independent Candidacy

Singson had planned to run as an independent candidate for the 2025 Senate race, emphasizing his commitment to addressing transport modernization and other key public issues amid the ongoing political tension surrounding the elections.

“Endorsed or not, I am grateful,” he said previously. “What matters most is showing my commitment through action, not promises.”

Putting Health First

Singson’s decision to withdraw reflects the challenges of balancing health and public service. While stepping back from politics is a difficult choice, it allows him to prioritize his recovery and well-being.

“Health is important, especially when serving the people,” Singson emphasized. “This is not the end of my journey—it’s a pause so I can continue helping in the future.”

For supporters, his withdrawal serves as a reminder that leaders must care for themselves to effectively serve others.

A Legacy of Service

Though Singson will no longer pursue a Senate seat, his impact on Philippine politics and governance remains significant.

Known for his hands-on leadership, he has consistently delivered results through his various public service roles that helped boost growth in communities he served.

Moving forward, Singson plans to explore other ways to contribute to the nation’s progress. While his health takes center stage for now, his dedication to helping others is unwavering.

A Thoughtful Exit

Singson’s withdrawal highlights the realities of political life, especially for senior leaders. His decision to prioritize health over ambition reflects a wise and thoughtful approach to leadership, one that recognizes the importance of both personal well-being and the need to shape laws that serve the public.

As he steps back from the 2025 elections, Singson leaves behind a legacy of resilience, hard work, and commitment to public service. His focus on recovery ensures that he can continue serving Filipinos in ways that truly matter.

For his supporters and the public, Singson’s decision is a testament to his genuine care for the people he has dedicated his life to serving. While his Senate bid may have ended, his passion for making a difference remains stronger than ever.
