Sara Duterte’s Impeachment Divides Congress

Sara Duterte Impeachment

The political scene in the Philippines is buzzing with talks of Sara Duterte’s impeachment complaints

Some lawmakers are pushing for it, while others think it’s not the right time. The debate has sparked strong opinions, both in Congress and among the public.

Lawmakers Split on Timing

Manila City 6th District Representative Bienvenido Abante Jr. recently shared why some congressmen are hesitant about moving forward with the impeachment.

He believes the 19th Congress may not have enough time to handle the process properly. Abante also doubts whether the Senate would even approve it right now.

Instead, he thinks it’s better to bring up Sara Duterte’s impeachment in the 20th Congress when lawmakers will have more time to prepare and tackle the issues. For now, he’s stepping back from supporting it.

Others Say Now Is the Time

Not everyone agrees with waiting. Iloilo 1st District Representative Janette Garin is confident that there’s still a good chance to gather enough support to move Sara Duterte’s impeachment forward. She believes many congressmen understand the complaints and are aware of their importance.

ACT Teachers Party List Representative France Castro, one of the impeachment’s supporters, insists that delaying is a mistake.

She says acting now is crucial since future political shifts—like midterm and presidential elections—might make it harder to address the issue later.

Public Pressure Builds

Outside Congress, the public is getting involved too. Groups wearing peach-colored ribbons gathered recently, urging lawmakers to hold Duterte accountable. They say it’s not just about politics but about fulfilling their duty to the Filipino people.

Akbayan Party List Representative Percival Cendaña added that delaying the impeachment could send the wrong message. He worries it might embolden Duterte to seek higher office and continue what critics see as abuses of power.

What’s Next?

For now, the future of Sara Duterte’s impeachment remains uncertain. Some lawmakers want to wait until the next Congress, while others are pressing for action now. The decision will have a big impact on the country’s political landscape and is one of the most closely watched Philippine political updates.

No matter what happens, this moment is a reminder of how important accountability is in leadership. Whether the impeachment moves forward or gets delayed, it will shape the future of Philippine politics.
