George Francis Miranda, a 46-year-old Filipino seafarer from Camarines Norte, is missing after a tugboat assisting another vessel was struck during a recent attack in the Strait of Hormuz.
The tugboat sailed out to assist a distressed ship navigating the narrow strait. During the mission, missiles reportedly struck the vessel, and it later sank. Details remain incomplete, and information about the crew has emerged slowly through several governments, shipping companies, and maritime authorities.
Miranda had been working aboard the tugboat when it was dispatched for the assistance mission. According to his family, he sent a short video message shortly before the vessel approached the troubled ship. That message is now the last contact relatives have had with him.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said it is coordinating with the shipping company and foreign authorities to gather verified information about the attack and the fate of those on board.
Maritime Crisis in the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz sits at the center of global energy routes, linking the Persian Gulf to the open waters of the Indian Ocean. 20% of global oil and gas shipments pass through this narrow corridor.
Since the Iran-US-Israel war broke out two weeks ago, several commercial vessels (including oil tankers) suffered missile or drone attacks by Iranian forces. The danger has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, with commercial shipping traffic dropping to near zero.
For Filipino seafarers, these developments carry particular weight. The Philippines supplies a significant portion of the global maritime workforce, and many Filipino sailors serve aboard vessels operating in Middle Eastern waters. When tensions rise in this region, Filipino families often feel the consequences at home.
The Tugboat Incident
The tugboat incident began emerging several days after the attack. According to maritime and regional sources, the vessel had been deployed to help another ship that encountered difficulties in the Strait of Hormuz.
During the operation, a missile struck the tugboat, which caught fire before eventually sinking.
Exactly how many crew members survived remains difficult to confirm. Different reports have presented contrasting numbers of casualties and missing sailors. Some authorities say several crew members were rescued, while others indicate that multiple sailors remain unaccounted for.
Such discrepancies are common in maritime emergencies. Ships often carry multinational crews, and rescue efforts may involve several countries and agencies. Each source releases information at different times, which can lead to temporary inconsistencies in casualty figures.
