Fake Products from China Threaten 2,000 Filipino Jobs, Tulfo Warns

The unchecked online sale of fake products from China is threatening the livelihood of at least 2,000 Filipinos, according to House Deputy Majority Leader Erwin Tulfo. Speaking out against this growing issue, Tulfo emphasized that local businesses are struggling to compete against the high number of imports of counterfeit and substandard goods being sold at below-market prices. This is placing law-abiding businesses, in an ever-increasingly difficult position. Tulfo said that representatives from over 15 companies, primarily appliance manufacturers and sellers, have recenlty reached out to him for assistance, due to the damaging impact of these counterfeit products on their operations.

These companies, including well-known brands such as American Home, Asahi, Astron, and Fujidenzo, employ a combined workforce of 300,000 people. They are facing severe financial losses because consumers are being lured away by the cheaper prices of fake products from China. Tulfo noted that these businesses have been diligent in paying taxes and complying with Philippine laws, yet, sadly they find themselves disadvantaged due to the unfair competition posed by these counterfeit goods.

Consequently, Tulfo is joining forces with fellow representatives from the ACT-CIS Partylist, including Edvic Yap and Jocelyn Tulfo, as well as Quezon City Rep. Ralph Wendel Tulfo and Benguet Rep. Eric Go Yap, will push for a congressional investigation into these damaging sales practices online. The main goal is to protect local businesses from further damage and prevent the loss of thousands of jobs.

Tulfo has questioned why government agencies, such as the Department of Trade and Industry and the Bureau of Customs, have allowed these products to enter the country without proper regulation. Tulfo clarified that he is not opposed to online selling, but insisted that all businesses, including online sellers, follow the laws set by the government to ensure fair competition and protect Filipino jobs. This is surely the best way to ensure a better and brighter economic future in the Philippines.
